About My Art

Douglas Gilbert drawing of self portrait

Refuge from technology...

Originally a fine artist, I spent decades in front of a screen creating commercial graphics and websites. I returned to a focused practice of fine arts by taking pencil to paper. I simplified my practice of mark making by relegating my work to one type of mark.

My drawings are abstract, figurative, and expressionistic. They exude a sensual, electric, and spiritual energy that transcends subject matter. Inspired by nature, quantum physics, mythology, and the human condition, my images come to life through the convergence of thousands of visible straight lines. The textural aspect of the line work invites viewers to get lost in the randomness of specific areas, creating opportunities for contemplation and connection.

Drawing is transformative. The start of a drawing is like embarking on a journey, each one starts with an intention and leads to some new realization which feeds my next work. Fascinated by its intimacy, and its versatility, my drawings not only create the destination but leave the path. Drawing is ubiquitous and timeless. It is fragile and yet enduring.
